In celebration of Ocean Month 2026, a simultaneous underwater cleanup activity (SCUBAsurero) and an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign for the coastal communities of Casiguran, Aurora was conducted on May 19–20, 2026, through the initiative of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The Local Government Unit of Casiguran, headed by our dedicated Municipal Mayor, Hon. Roynald S. Soriano, extended full support to ensure the success of the activity by providing assistance through the MENRO and MAO.

This year’s theme, “𝘚𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩, 𝘚𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯,” highlights the vital role of marine ecosystems in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. It also aligns with Ocean Decade Challenge 6, which focuses on safeguarding communities from ocean-related hazards such as stronger typhoons, sea-level rise, and coastal erosion.

During the dive operation in Ditinagyan Marine Protected Area, approximately 25 kilograms of abandoned “ghost nets” were successfully retrieved underwater. These discarded nets pose serious threats to coral reefs and marine life. Their removal helps restore healthier marine habitats and allows coral ecosystems to thrive. Encouragingly, no illegal fishing activities were observed during the operation.

Meanwhile, the IEC campaign aimed to strengthen community resilience by raising awareness about marine pollution, promoting proper and sustainable waste management practices, and encouraging stakeholders to actively participate in reducing risks associated with flooding, storm surges, and coastal degradation.

The pristine waters of Casiguran serve as home to countless marine species and play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. Let us continue working together to protect and preserve our oceans for future generations.
